Zero waste guide 2.0

Didn't you think we'd stop at the bathroom?

Moving towards zero waste is not an easy task, but when you get started, it is better to do it thoroughly and for the whole house!

So how do you get organized when tackling the toughest room in the house? We reveal our advice for a model kitchen.

Aiming for zero waste is not just for the sake of good conscience. Zero waste allows you to save money, learn to be organized to make your life easier, limit pollution but also take care of your health and well-being.

Start by focusing on a few priorities. If you want to change everything at once, you will certainly end up getting discouraged and giving up everything. So, ready to change your habits? The goal is not to be perfect right away but to do a little better little by little.

The first thing to do is take an inventory of your closets. What are substitutable products? What are their alternatives and where can you find them?

Here are some tips for getting started.

  1. Buy glass containers and jars to store and take out. These will be your best allies. Remember to have enough and of all sizes. Thanks to this investment, you will be able to say goodbye to aluminum, bags and plastic film. And when it comes to the freezer, glass is fine too;

  2. Forget starches, condiments and legumes from supermarkets. These are most often overpacked. Look to bulk stores that often reassure you about quality and guarantee more local choices. Many new teachings are emerging and offer solutions in bulk;

  3. Opt for solid cleaning products or make your own. Solid hand and dish soap, clay stone for surfaces, and vinegar are quick and effective solutions. Sometimes getting back to basics is key;

  4. Stop buying plastic ice cube bags. Choose ice cube trays that are more durable;

  5. Avoid plastic cups, it's an ecological disaster and it's useless to have them at home;

  6. Avoid plastic bottles and prefer gourds to get to work or on a walk. Buy a water bottle / thermo bottle in your image. There are even water bottles of 2 liters and more;

  7. Banish plastic straws and invest in metal or bamboo straws. They are washable and much more practical;

  8. Take the plunge and prepare your snacks and pastries at home. You will avoid the disaster of the packaging but especially the harmful ingredients and the excess sugar contained in the majority of the choices of the store. A positive combination for health and the planet. You can even prepare large quantities to freeze later;

  9. Some packaged products are unavoidable. Try to opt for larger containers and repackage them at home;

  10. Take advantage of your good resolution to pick up your ingredients at the local farm or vegetable garden. You will have fresh, natural and local products. Do not forget to bring your reusable containers and bags when shopping;

  11. Opt for compost! There are biodegradable bins, but also indoor compost solutions that are even suitable for living in an apartment. For non-biodegradable waste, try to sort directly by having bins of different colors for example;

  12. Cook homemade meals! Avoid ready meals which are not healthy, but which are also almost always wrapped in plastic;

  13. Make a shopping list and plan your meals in advance to avoid waste. Why not try batch cooking? Individuals can also prepare meals in larger quantities and freeze them for the following week;

  14. Try plastic-free dish brushes with interchangeable heads and washable sponges. You will find all kinds in ecological shops;

  15. For sparkling water lovers, new systems and soda machines have emerged and are an excellent alternative;

  16. Invest in sustainable utensils and avoid plastic ones;

  17. Replace your paper towel with microfiber or more sustainable paper, Pure Bamboo 😉

It doesn't seem very complicated, but will you be able to keep these habits?
